Casting For Zombies: Zombies and the Outdoors

(From the "Philosophy" section of Zombie Rod and Tackle Co.) ...  “Zombie Rod & Tackle designs rods for the most discriminating anglers. Experience, knowledge and stubborn adherence to our mission of delivering superior rods. We want to earn your business and are determined to make sure you want to buy more Zombie rods.”  Ironic because most anglers are not discriminating at all, and would welcome any species of fish that might bight their line!
Growing up in a New England fishing home, fishing has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. From fly fishing, to bait fishing, to salt water, fresh water, nets and even through the ice, I have done it all in the sport of fishing. But never in my life could I have imagined that the zombie outbreak would spread to the world of fishing. After all if you can bite a nice warm fatty American, why bother trying to wrangle a tuna for dinner?
Nonetheless, a simple Google search for “zombie fishing” opened my doors into a world of zombie themed fishing gear and product lines.  Despite one of the worst “philosophies” and opening few sentences I have ever read; as an experienced angler I can tell you that some of the rods this particular company builds are quite well made and seem to be a relatively decent product. “ TackleTour said in one of their reviews of Zombie Rods: "SCARY ATTENTION TO DETAIL..."  That's what you get with a Zombie Rod.”… Scary is an excellent adjective because fishing aside all this brought me back to the eternal question; what is America’s fascination with Zombies and Zombie culture?  Never mind Pride and Prejudice, or TV shows with Ranger Rick the deputy sheriff… I am talking about the reality of rednecks out there casting and blasting with Zombie themed outdoor products. Furthermore these products are actively being marketed with “scary attention to detail.”  In particular this class has really made me more aware of the zombie influence and infatuation in American culture.  However I still find it difficult (scary) to believe that serious fisherman and sportsman alike are actually going to buy a product based on a “ zombie toughness rating”, rather than how well the equipment will hold up in the salty North Atlantic.  Regardless, have a look at this website and see how insane some of the clothing and products are. I didn’t bother trying, but God only knows what will show up in a Google search for “Zombie Hunting”.  - tight lines

  1. It is funny because there have been so many comments about everyone hating on rednecks (not calling you a redneck) until a zombie apocalypse happens. I don't like the term redneck, but it generalizes over the type of people who could likely survive the best when it comes to a zombie apocalypse since they know how to take care of themselves the most (proficient in hunting, fishing, tracking, wilderness living and such). This can be seen clearly in The Walking Dead, having everyone at first look down upon Daryl, yet now he is basically the best character on that show! So I feel there is definitely more advertisement focus on such sporting areas because come the zombie apocalypse, your gonna want someone who specializes in those areas.
